New Lord Mayor vows to `boost Belfast`
23 June 2012
New Lord Mayor, Alderman Gavin Robinson, has declared his aim to `boost Belfast` during his year in office.
At his Installation Dinner in the City Hall on Saturday night (23 June), the First Citizen revealed his hopes for the year ahead and his vision of Belfast as a city uniquely placed to make a real difference.
“Whilst the recession presents difficulties for us all, I believe that Belfast`s role in our recovery is vital. As the main economic hub and tourist gateway to Northern Ireland, we are not only uniquely placed to make a difference, we are mandated to make a difference - and make a difference we must,” he said.
“Boosting our business, boosting innovation and skills, boosting relations within our community and indeed, more internationally are all essentials if we are going to give Belfast the boost it needs.
“Going forward, we need to ensure that both we as a Council and more regionally, the Northern Ireland Executive, are positioned to support and encourage such innovative growth. Being assured of the talent we have, we must then provide the technology to assist our budding inventors, entrepreneurs and burgeoning Creative Industries”.
Referring to Belfast`s recent kudos in paving the way to becoming a Super Connected City, the Lord Mayor highlighted the benefits of boosting connections.
He added: “But whilst such connectivity is vital, I firmly believe that if we fail to connect as individuals, one on one, personally and sincerely, then we will fail to connect with the hearts and minds of one another. A tolerant, understanding and self respecting people, at common ease with one another and those who surround us will cement the best foundation for successful growth.
“Over the course of this year ahead, I hope I can play my part in building such personal connections right across the city”.
First Minister Peter Robinson was guest speaker at his party colleague`s Installation Dinner.
