Council teams working to provide flooding assistance

28 June 2012

Belfast City Council has deployed 15 teams to inspect properties affected by last night`s flooding.

Council staff are giving advice and assessing whether homes are eligible to receive a hardship payment. As of lunchtime today, the council`s flood helpline has received around 500 calls.

The council is also working with NI Water to arrange for the worse affected homes to be decontaminated.

Lord Mayor of Belfast Alderman Gavin Robinson today visited some of the worst affected homes across the city.

He said: “Council staff and elected representatives have been working round the clock to provide whatever assistance they can to those whose homes have been affected. We are not aware of any new flooding incidents since last night however the forecast is still uncertain and there is a chance of more rain this evening.

“Our emergency room will remain open and, working in partnership with other agencies, council staff will continue to keep the situation under review. Sandbags are still being delivered to the worst affected areas and anyone wishing to use shower facilities in council leisure centres can do so free of charge.”

Anyone who has been affected by flooding in the Belfast City Council area should call 0800 707 6965. Flooding advice and information is also available on the council website www.belfastcity.gov.uk/flooding
