Awards scheme encourages a `Brighter Belfast`

2 July 2012

The sun may be in short supply this summer but Belfast people are being urged to make a blooming great effort to make their city brighter.

Today the Lord Mayor of Belfast Alderman Gavin Robinson launched the `Brighter Belfast` Environmental Awards at one of the city`s most popular parklands.

The awards, now in their sixth year, are organised by Belfast City Council and recognise and celebrate the contributions of individuals, groups, schools and businesses in making their local environment a brighter, cleaner, greener place.

Speaking at this morning`s launch at Malone House in Barnett`s Demesne, Alderman Robinson said: “It`s been a disappointing summer so far and I think we could all do with a little bit of colour and sunshine to counter the grey skies.

“The `Brighter Belfast` awards give people the opportunity to gain the recognition and credit they deserve for doing their bit for their local environment; whether it is organising community clean-ups, trying to reduce your carbon footprint or creating a wildlife habitat. There are also some great prizes up for grabs.”

There are five categories to enter:

• Litter Heroes Award
• Business and the Community Together Award
• Green Initiative Award
• Education for Change Award
• Nature Conservation Award

More information on the awards and how to enter can be found at www.belfastcity.gov.uk/brighterbelfast or for an application form call 028 9032 0202 (ext 5377) or email catcleansing@belfastcity.gov.uk . The closing date for applications is Monday 19 November.

Those shortlisted will attend a gala awards ceremony in City Hall in January 2013. Winners will receive a bespoke trophy and £500.

The `Brighter Belfast` Environmental Awards will also incorporate the `Belfast in Bloom` Awards. For more information on `Belfast in Bloom` visit www.belfastcity.gov.uk/belfastinbloom
