Activity holds key to `ageing well’
28 February 2006
Did you know that keeping active in later life can “add years to life” - even for previously inactive people?
As part of the `Ageing Well /Community Sports Initiative’, Belfast City Council, in partnership with Age Concern Northern Ireland and Sports Council Northern Ireland, is organising a series of activity taster days for people over the age of 50.
The taster days will take place at a number of Council-owned leisure centres across the city during the next week, starting tomorrow (Wednesday March 1) and continuing until next Tuesday (March 7). The centres involved are the Olympia, Shankill, Falls and Grove Leisure Centres, and the Indoor Tennis Centre on the Ormeau Embankment.
Anyone who is over 50 is invited to along to their nearest centre, either just to have a look or try out at some of the activities on offer.
Kevin Murray, Sports Development Officer at Age Concern, said: “There is increasing evidence of the benefits of physical activity in relation to disease prevention, mobility, independence and quality of life. Many people are not aware of the opportunities which exist and indeed negative attitudes to ageing can make it more difficult to become involved in getting active.”
Paddy McGrattan, Sports Development Officer with Belfast City Council, added: “Taking part in one of these taster days with give people the chance to meet up with friends old and new whilst at the same time doing something which is beneficial to their health and well being.”
