What happens when I make a complaint?
If you are experiencing a problem with noise, call us on 028 9037 3006.Our noise control officers will record the details of your complaint and arrange to visit you as soon as possible.
They will need direct evidence of the noise you're experiencing, so you should call us when the noise is happening, rather than afterwards.
We also operate a Night-Time Noise Service, using the same number, which is available Monday to Sunday from 8pm to 4am.
Our officers may also ask you to keep a diary recording the dates and times of each disturbance, or to allow them into your home to monitor the noise.
Confidentiality
We do not investigate anonymous complaints but any complaint you make will remain confidential. This means we will not tell the person responsible for the noise who has complained about them.
Sometimes, if a grievance is taken to court, we may have to reveal who has made the initial complaint. However, you can tell us if you don't want things to go that far.
Alternative action
If we do not take action to resolve your complaint or you do not want to involve us, you can also complain about noise directly to the magistrates' court, under Article 39 of the Pollution Control and Local Government (Northern Ireland) Order 1978.The court must be persuaded that the noise is a nuisance.
Further information about this option is available from the Department of the Environment's Bothered by Noise publication, which is available to download from their website.
