Site preparation
The southern portion of the site was created in the late 1970s and early 1980s and is currently being consolidated with excavation and demolition rubble. This process is required to reduce further settlement and once completed, the site will be ready for development. Buildings will need to be piled to provide stable foundations and to eliminate the problem of possible further settlement.
The northern portion of the site was created more recently and stopped being used as a dump in 2007. This is the proposed location of the Giant's Park.
In the meantime, we will continue to cap the waste with a one metre thick layer of clay and one metre of soil and allow the ground to settle naturally.
Landfill gas
As the waste decomposes, it gives off landfill gas. This is a greenhouse gas but the clay cap prevents it from reaching the surface and escaping into the atmosphere.A network of underground pipes and wells have been installed. These collect the gas which is pumped to a central point where we use it to generate 'green' electricity
