An Droichead

An Droichead Date: October 2008 - July 2009
Location: Railway Bridge at lower Ormeau Road
Artist: Patricia Lavery

A sculpture has been erected on the railway bridge on the lower Ormeau Road. The specially-commissioned piece both celebrates the variety of cultures living in the area and acts as a gateway to the Ormeau Road area, linking it with the Gasworks area and the city centre.

The 2.5 metre steel sculpture is made up of two reinforced galvanised steel arcs intercepting at a central point, cradling a piece of circular coloured fused glass.

The sculpture reflects the architectural features in the area and symbolises harmony among the communities.

The artists worked closely with a variety of community groups in the area, including Irish language, Chinese, African and Caribbean groups, as well residents from both the lower Ormeau and Donegall Pass, to create a multi-cultural art piece which would capture the ethos of the area.
