Donegall Pass Community Centre
Date: October 2008 - June 2009Location: Donegall Pass
Work has been completed on replacing a paramilitary commemorative mural on Donegall Pass.
The old mural, depicting a piper standing over a gravestone – on the gable wall of a bar on the corner of Pine Street – was removed and replaced with a new one, commemorating the lives of all those Ulster men who died in the First World War.
The bright new mural used modern digital production techniques to replace the old painted one. It depicts a poppy field, with the Ulster Tower at Thiepval as its centrepiece. The tower is surrounded by a line of poetry – ‘Lay them away on the hillside, along with the brave and the bold, Inscribe their names on the role of fame in letters of purest gold’ – and is flanked by two contemporary military cap badges
The artist, Patricia Lavery, worked closely with local community representatives, including the Donegall Pass Community Centre committee, residents and community workers, firstly to identify the subject for the new mural and then to bring it to fruition.
