Food waste collection trial
We're introducing a new food waste collection service to make it easier for you to recycle your leftover food. The trial scheme began in June 2008 and will run until October 2009. It covers 7,000 homes in the following areas:
- lower Ormeau
- Markets
- Ballynafeigh
- Sydenham
- Donegall Road
- Falls.
How it works
If you live in one of our target areas, we will provide you with a larger food bin, a smaller kitchen 'caddy' bin and a supply of biodegradable bags, together with instructions on how to use them. All you need to do is place your leftovers in your caddy (or your larger food bin when it gets full) and put it out for collection every week on the same day as your black kerbside box.
You can put all sorts of food waste in your bin, including dairy products, meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, bread, rice, pasta, tea, coffee and other leftover food.
Food packaging, plastic bags, fats, oils or liquids should not be placed in the bins.
During the trial, your black landfill bin will only be collected every two weeks.
If you need a replacement black kerbside box, call Bryson Recycling on 028 9084 8494.
Aim of the scheme
The trial will help reduce the amount of food waste we send to landfill every year.Rotting food creates harmful greenhouse gases known to cause climate change.
Collecting food waste separately means we can process it in a more environmentally-friendly way, creating energy as a renewable bio-fuel.
If the trial proves successful, we hope to extend it to households across Belfast.
Using your bin
Using your food waste bin is simple. Just follow these tips:- make sure your bin is left out by 7am on your collection day, along with your black kerbside box
- make sure your bin is clearly visible
- put your house name or number on your larger bin so it doesn't get lost
- keep your food waste caddy and bin clean by tying the biodegradable bags at the top when they are full
- if you need more bags, call us on 0800 032 8100
- keep your caddy clean by rinsing it out with water or wiping it down with a clean kitchen cloth.
