Bottle banks
In Belfast, we use thousands of glass bottles and jars every week. In 2010, we recycled 1,800 tonnes of glass - just a fraction of all the glass used in the city.
This saved us £93,000 in landfill tax but, if we recycled all our glass bottles and jars, we could divert this waste away from landfill, saving much more money.
All the glass we recycle in Belfast is sent to Quinn Glass in County Fermanagh to be recycled. It is then used to create new glass bottles for use here and across Europe. Not only does this help the environment, but it also creates jobs here in Northern Ireland, through the actual recycling process, as well as through collection and transport.
Your city needs you to recycle your glass!
We have 49 sets of bottle banks across Belfast where you can recycle glass bottles and jars. There are also many privately-managed bottle banks at some supermarkets and public spaces.Overall, there are hundreds of places where you can recycle your glass!
Please remember that bottle banks are only for glass bottles and jars. We can't recycle window glass, crockery or drinking glasses in these bins.
If you’re taking your glass to a bottle bank in a cardboard box or plastic bag, please take it home with you and reuse it. Do not leave litter at the bank.
You can also recycle glass using your kerbside recycling box if you have one, or at any of our recycling centres
