Temporary closure at Alexandra Park Avenue recycling centre
Alexandra Park Avenue recycling centre is closed for essential maintenance work from 31 October 2011 for about eighteen weeks until March 2012.Residents who normally recycle at Alexandra Park Avenue can still use our other recycling centres (Dargan Road temporary recycling centre, Blackstaff Way, Palmerston Road and Ormeau) and glass recycling points are open as normal, as are our civic amenity sites (Agnes Street and Springfield Avenue).
Dargan Road temporary recycling centre
Due to the closure of Alexandra Park Avenue recycling centre, we have opened a temporary recycling centre at Dargan Road.We can't accept oil (cooking, engine oil or oil filters) at this site but you can recycle the rest of your waste here. Remember if you have a bulky item (such as furniture or fridges) you can arrange a free household bulky waste collection by calling us on 028 9027 0230.
Recycling is only one way of minimising waste, but by reducing and reusing waste items we can do even more to prevent waste in the first place.
Opening hours
Our centres are open from 8.30am to 5.30pm (Monday to Friday), 9am to 5pm (Saturday) and 12pm to 5pm (Sunday).Recycling video
This short video shows you around one of our recycling centres and provides information about which items you can recycle and what happens to them.Re-use scheme at our recycling centres
We're now able to re-use more of the household waste that you bring to our recycling centres.Funding from the Department of the Environment's Rethink Waste NI programme has allowed us to buy some extra collection equipment for our recycling centres and to arrange with a local charity to collect a wider range of good quality items to be re-used.
We've awarded this re-use contract to East Belfast Mission. They will sell the items in their shops or pass them on to other suitable charities.
You can donate your good quality materials including:
- furniture (good quality items from small pieces to 3 piece suites)
- bicycles (in working order)
- toys and games (must be complete and have a CE safety label)
- good, clean soft furnishing (rugs, curtains, bedding)
- jewellery, handbags and accessories
- bric-a-brac and households items (mirrors, pictures, glassware)
- natural wood items for refurbishment.
And good quality books, CDs and DVDs were already being taken by Oxfam.
We hope to be able to add to this list as time goes on.
All items donated for re-use must be given to the authorised charities. We can't let anyone else take them.
If you have any questions about the scheme please call us on 0800 032 8100.
