Registrations held by the Registrar's office

Civil registration in Ireland (both North and South) is a relatively new phenomenon, so the number of registrations we have is limited.

They date mainly from 1997 and beyond.

Births

Civil registration of births began in 1864, but we only hold records for births registered in Belfast since 1997.

We do not hold records for births from before this date.

Marriages

Protestant marriage registrations have been recorded since 1845, while records of marriages in the Roman Catholic Church date back to 1864.

We do not hold records for marriages dating back to this period.

Our historical registrations section has information on how to obtain registration records from 1996 and before.
