Scores on the Doors

Plate of pasta and fork Scores on the Doors is a UK-wide food hygiene scheme which awards restaurants, takeaways and other food businesses a rating, based on how well they meet food safety standards.

Their 'score' is then displayed online, or on their premises, allowing customers to check a restaurant's compliance level before they decide to eat there.

The scheme encourages owners to comply with hygiene regulations, reduces illnesses caused by food poisoning and helps customers make a more informed choice about where they eat.
The pilot system is supported by the Food Standards Agency, but inspections of businesses within the council's electoral area are carried out by our environmental health inspectors.

How does the scheme work?

Our inspectors visit cafés, restaurants, pubs, shops and other businesses which sell food to check whether they comply with food hygiene regulations. They then award each premises a star rating, with five the highest and zero the lowest.

How do I check a Scores on the Doors rating?

Once they have received a star rating, businesses are given a certificate and a sticker to display on their door or window.

The results are also available from the Scores on the Doors website, where you can search for restaurants and takeaways and view their rating.

You can also ask the premises directly or send a text message to receive an instant update.
