Smoking areas for customers

Businesses are not required to provide outdoor smoking areas for their staff or customers.

If you are a business owner and you want to erect an awning, canopy, shelter or other covered smoking area, call our building control team on 028 9027 0432 for help and advice.

You may need to contact the Planning Service on 028 9025 2800 or the Roads Service on 028 9025 3000 to check whether you have the correct permissions.

And, if the outside area is on a public footpath and you plan to serve alcohol, you will also need to find out if your liquor licence allows drinking in the area.
