Cigarette litter

More than 50,000 cigarette butts are dropped on our streets every week - that's 15 per cent of all litter in Belfast!

Many of them are dumped outside workplaces and businesses, where it is now illegal to smoke inside.

Our research also shows that smokers are more likely to drop litter than non-smokers, with 64 per cent admitting to littering.

Although we have employed extra litter wardens to deal with the problem, particularly outside restaurants, pubs and clubs, we're urging smokers and businesses to take responsibility for their litter.

Don't forget - if you are caught littering, you can be fined £50.

Disposing of cigarette butts

If you are a business owner, you should supply a cigarette butt bin outside your premises, so staff who smoke can dispose of their litter correctly.
We're also giving away free stubbis to smokers.

These are free, reusable pocket-sized wallets which allow you to store up to five cigarette butts until you can find a bin.

You can get a stubbi by calling us on 028 9027 0230, emailing stubitout@belfastcity.gov.uk or writing to us at:
