Tips to stop smoking
Are you trying to quit smoking? Do you need some help and advice?Try following these simple tips:
- call the Smokers' Helpline on 0800 85 85 85 or talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are worried about quitting
- make a list of all the reasons why you want to quit smoking and keep it somewhere where you can see it every day
- consider how much money you will save by quitting
- pick a date to quit and stick to it
- find out about nicotine replacement therapies and treatments such as nicotine chewing gum, patches, inhalators, nasal sprays, tablets and lozenges
- be realistic about your plans to quit, as nicotine withdrawal could make you irritable, tired, unable to sleep and annoyed
- get support by asking your friends and family to help you
- avoid temptation, especially in the first few days, by staying away from places and situations where you usually smoke
- think of yourself as a non-smoker
- consider how your smoking harms other people, particularly children.
