Seminar two: City Regeneration

Professor John Palmieri

Boston's focus on sustainable development in uncertain economic times

On 7 March 2011 John Palmieri, Director of the Boston Redevelopment Authority, delivered an extremely informative lecture on the topic of city regeneration.

With over 25 years experience in planning and economic development, Palmieri currently spearheads a number of major initiatives in Boston including the development of the South Boston Waterfront as an innovation centre, the revitalisation of Boston's historic shopping district – Downtown Crossing, and the growth of Boston's core economic sectors.

Palmieri's experiences in the development of the Boston's Waterfront offered interesting parallels with Belfast's development of Titanic Quarter. In addition, he explained the huge importance placed on community input in development in Boston, and the innovative techniques used to involve the community.

Other issues that struck a chord with the Belfast audience included the key role played by universities in Boston's development, and some interesting examples of transit-orientated development.

A summary of John Palmieri's presentation is included in a Development Brief
