Street cleaning
Making Belfast a clean and attractive city is one of our most important jobs.
Our street cleaning section is responsible for making sure that the streets of Belfast are kept clean and free from litter.
This includes:
- litter removal
- chewing gum removal
- dog fouling
- illegal dumping (fly-tipping)
- graffiti removal
- flyposting removal
- dead animal removal
- street litter bins
- litter enforcement.
We clean the streets using brushes, litter picks and street sweeping machines. We're also responsible for enforcing anti-litter laws and educating communities about street cleanliness. We do this through our anti-litter campaign and various school and community competitions and projects.
We try to maintain a minimum city-wide cleanliness index of 70 (67 is recognised as a good standard by Tidy Northern Ireland). Each month we publish information about how we've performed against this objective on our customer service standards page
