Our Victorian Gardens 

The Tropical Ravine is a unique, historic building set at the heart of Botanic Gardens. It was created in Belfast’s Victorian heyday in order to display rare and beautiful tropical plants brought to the city from around the world. 

This self-led schools’ resource, will showcase the Tropical Ravine and Botanic Garden’s heritage as well as explore Victorian invention, engineering and learn more about plants properties and their uses.

This Self-led tour caters for KS1 and KS2 learning.

Information Details
Session  Led by teacher
Location Tropical Ravine upper walkways, ground floor tropical zone and Botanical Gardens.
Access to the Tropical Ravine ground floor will only be available when booked through the Education officer. 
Resources on site:  Worksheets, clipboards and Activity Box with tools for onsite learning
Session length: The session length will vary depending on group requirements: thirty minutes to 3 hours
Available Tuesday morning, Wednesday afternoon, Thursday morning and Friday morning

Digital Ravine Pack

In partnership with Nerve Centre Belfast

This learning resource includes pre and post Tropical Ravine visit classroom support and self-led visit to the Tropical Ravine. 

This resource focuses on rainforest and native plants, their uses and built environment and our relationship with these plants. This resource will include learning through Minecraft, augmented reality and coding. 

Pupils will need access to digital tablets to participate in this resource.

This self-led resource caters for Foundation Stage, KS1, KS2 and KS3 learning.

How to book a visit

If you would like to book your class onto a self-led educational visit, please contact us in advance of your proposed date to check availability and to discuss your group’s requirements.

School groups that are not formally booked in may be subject to restricted access or staggered entry, due to the maximum number of visitors allowed in the building at any one time.

Preliminary visits

We recommend that teachers visit the newly refurbished Tropical Ravine for familiarisation with the new building, exhibition and facilities. The Digital Ravine Pack augmented reality self-led tour necessitates all digital tablet operating system to be up to date; we encourage teachers to arrange a preliminary visit with their classroom digital tablets to ensure they work with this self-led resource.

Facilities

Lunches and picnics

The Bowling Pavilion can be booked for groups to have lunch while visiting the Gardens. The Pavilion is 3-5 minutes’ walk from the Ravine. It is wheelchair accessible and has an accessible toilet. Please tell us when you book if you want your group to have lunch in the Bowling Pavilion.

Belfast WiFi

Free WiFi is available at the Tropical Ravine.

Accessibility

Wheelchair and mobility 

The Tropical Ravine is accessible to wheelchair users within the spaces used for a full educational visit, including the Tropical Zone and the Ravine walkway. There is lift access to the exhibition on the Ravine walkway, but some doors are not automatic.  

Lunches and picnics

The Bowling Pavilion can be booked for groups to have lunch while visiting the Gardens. The Pavilion is 3-5 minutes’ walk from the Ravine. It is wheelchair accessible and has an accessible toilet. Please tell us when you book if you want your group to have lunch in the Bowling Pavilion. 

Toilets

There is an accessible toilet in the Tropical Ravine building. There are also public toilets in the Gardens which have an accessible toilet. Please request the key to make the latter available to your group if you are touring the Gardens. 

Disabled parking

If your group has mobility requirements, please advise us when booking to facilitate your needs. 

Hearing impaired 

The Tropical Ravine has an induction loop system. If a member of your group needs to use this, please advise when booking.
