From punk to proms, trad to rock legends and fantastic emerging new talent, Belfast’s music scene (past and present) is one that everyone can be proud of.
There’s already a host of music-related activity in the pipeline for Belfast throughout 2018-2019. We’re becoming the preferred prime location for one-off events and there’s an annual programme of music activities citywide.
Over the next few years, we’ll be working in partnership to galvanise the full potential of local music. We want to use it to strengthen the cultural ecosystem for the benefit of everyone.
City of Music
Belfast City has a unique relationship with music across many genres. Music is recognised as a distinctive aspect of Belfast’s cultural profile with audience research indicating high levels of engagement locally as well as strong links to the city’s international profile. The city is known internationally for having a rich and diverse musical history but it also has a promising future. In March 2018 Belfast City Council backed a proposal for the city and its partners to make an application for the endorsement of UNESCO City of Music status.
The next step in this process will be the creation of a “City of Music Steering Group” to be established by autumn 2019. If successful this will lead to a formal application to UNESCO which must be submitted by Belfast City Council in 2021 or 2023.
For more information on this project please read the terms of reference or to apply to be part of “The City of Music Designation Steering Group” complete and submit the expression of interest by 5pm Wednesday 14 August 2019.
