Tourism is important in making Belfast a successful city. Visitors not only contribute to the social and cultural life of the city but bring substantial money into the local economy. The number of visitors welcomed to the city has grown to almost 9.5 million each year. People come here to enjoy the great restaurants, nightlife, the shopping and the city's strong cultural and artistic life.

We work with other organisations to make Belfast a rich and enjoyable experience for the visitor.

We have partnerships with:

  • Visit Belfast
  • Tourism Northern Ireland
  • central government
  • the city's trade organisations and the private sector.

Growing tourism is one of the council’s key priorities and we have ambitious targets to double the value of tourism to the city to £870m per year by 2020. Our strategy to help us achieve this is detailed in the Belfast Integrated Tourism Strategy 2015-2020. You can download this document on our tourism strategy page.

Belfast needs your vote!

Belfast has been shortlisted for the title of Europe’s Leading City Break Destination in the prestigious World Travel Awards this year, and we are urging you, the people of Belfast, to get behind the campaign by voting before the closing date of 6 August.

Already home to the World’s Leading Tourist Attraction in Titanic Belfast, Belfast’s reputation as a tourist destination has grown in recent years, and our city now welcomes millions of visitors each year, who come from all over the world to enjoy everything on offer – from great visitor attractions to fantastic food and drink.

Belfast will, however, be facing some stiff competition from cities such as London, Amsterdam and Dublin, who have also been shortlisted, and that’s why every vote will count.

We would like to invite you to visit and follow the instructions to register your name, email address and to place your vote.

And don't forget to show your pride and share the news with your friends and family on social media using #votebelfast!

Supporting the city's tourism industry

We have a major role to play in the development of the tourism industry in the city and in promoting Belfast to the outside world. Our focus is on:

  • building cultural tourism
  • developing tourism products
  • supporting our evening economy
  • carrying out research
  • monitoring tourism activity.
