Waste treatment facility
At a special council meeting in June 2009, our councillors decided to release a portion of land on the North Foreshore to allow arc 21 to build a new waste treatment facility. The site will house a Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) facility, not an Energy from Waste (EFW) plant, which was also suggested.
What will the facility do?
The MBT facility will sort and compact waste before it is sent to landfill or to an EFW plant. The area of land where this will happen is marked in yellow on the map. You can also click on the map to see a larger version.
The MBT plant will help us to meet legislative targets laid out by the European Union, which limit the amount of waste we send to landfill. It'll also encourage us to recycle more of the waste we produce.
By 2014, we'll actually need two MBT facilities, as well as an EFW plant, to help us meet these targets and to avoid any fines we incur being passed on to ratepayers in Belfast.
