Consultation opens on Springfield Dam Park Masterplan
11 Jun 2018
Belfast City Council has today (Monday 11 June) started a consultation exercise in relation to proposals to redevelop Springfield Dam and Park.
The project, known as the Springfield Dam Park Masterplan, is part of Belfast City Council’s PEACE IV plan, which is financed through the European Union and managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). Match-funding has been provided by the Executive Office in Northern Ireland and the Department for Rural and Community Development in Ireland. Funding for the redevelopment of Springfield Dam is being provided by the Department for Communities.
“The redevelopment of Springfield Dam Park is the first step in our plans to reconnect communities in an area stretching from Glencairn to Bog Meadows,” explained Alderman Jim Rodgers, Chairman of the Council’s Strategic Policy and Resources Committee.
“By reconnecting the dam and park we will create a new signature civic space with improved access, recreational facilities and environmental enhancements.”
The Springfield Dam Park Masterplan aims to:
• Improve access to and around the site by creating a number of new entrance points around the park, including a signature pedestrian access point to the north of the site; car parking, including accessible parking spaces; and a new pedestrian bridge crossing the dam.
• Create new recreational facilities, including fishing stands along the east bank of the dam; a circular pathway will provide quiet and scenic places for walking, jogging and exercising; a new modular classroom, providing a year-round meeting place for schools and community groups and a dedicated outdoor event space, enabling fairs and community events to take place.
• Deliver environmental enhancements such as a number of floating islands and wildflower planting, providing additional habitat for birds and wildlife; and further enhancing the existing ecological richness of the area through additional planting throughout the site.
• Providing overall site enhancements, including a new viewing area, information panels will outlining the history of the dam, and new lighting and fencing throughout the park, ensuring an attractive and uniform look throughout the site.
Online consultation for the project opens today (Monday 11 June) and will run for three months, closing at midnight on Sunday 9 September. Further information, including copies of the plans and a link to the consultation, can be found at www.belfastcity.gov.uk/peaceiv
Hard copies of the survey will also be available at an information day being held on Tuesday 26 June at the Innovation Factory, Forthriver Business Park, Springfield Road, and by contacting the Council’s Property and Projects Department on 9032 0202 ext 3487 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
. Information boards showing a map of the site and detailing the plans will also be available to view at a number of community facilities in the area during the consultation period; details of these will be published on the Council’s website.
