Belfast Blitz anniversary
April 2016 marked the 75 year anniversary of the Belfast Blitz and we worked with partners to commemorate this important event in our city's history.
During April and May 1941, Belfast suffered two nights of strategic bombing which killed over 1,000 people and destroyed much of the city.
To recognise this anniversary installed plaques at the following sites where the greatest loss of life occurred:
- St Patrick’s Church
- Hogarth Street
- Ohio Street
- Heather Street
- Greencastle
- York Street Mill
- Vere Street
- Sussex Street
- Atlantic Avenue
- Percy Street
- Thorndyke Street
- Trinity Street Church
- Ravenscroft Avenue
- Lincoln Avenue
- Blythe Street
- Campbell College
- Victoria Barracks
- Burke Street
- Unity Street
- Annadale Street
- Ballynure Street
We'll also placed plaques at St George's Market and Falls and Peter's Hill Baths – these buildings were used as mortuaries during the disaster.
