Equality action plan consultation

On 1 April 2015, as part of local government reform, we took in around 53,000 additional residents and 21,000 households as the number of councils in Northern Ireland was reduced from 26 to 11. Last year, the people of Belfast elected 60 councillors to represent them in the expanded city.

The aim of the reform programme is to develop stronger, more effective local government which delivers a broader range of services for all citizens. Services may be adapted to make sure we cater for all our customers. If anything, our services will become more citizen-focused and integrated, with a real emphasis on how we meet community need and improve quality of life.

The Equality Action Plan 2015 - 2016

We have prepared an Equality Scheme for the new council, and as part of this a new Equality Action Plan has been developed for an interim period of 1 year from 2015 to 2016. This one year Equality Action Plan outlines the ways in which we will promote equality of opportunity and good relations through our services and functions.

The Audit of Inequalities

Alongside this one year Equality Action Plan 2015 - 16 we have also began to carry out an Audit of Inequalities. This will help us identify any inequalities that exist in both existing and new or transferring functions.

We want you to tell us about any inequalities you feel exist in our functions and we will use the feedback you give to inform our next Equality Action Plan from 2016 - 2020.
