Reusable, environmentally-friendly sanitary products

  • Update on Thursday 31 March 2022

The scheme is oversubscribed with applications for our free sanitary products. We are unable to accept any more orders on Hey Girls website. If our scheme is reintroduced, we will update this page and our social media channels.

  • Free packs of period products

We have teamed up with 'Hey Girls', a social enterprise that produces environmentally-friendly period products. If you live in Belfast, you can sign up to receive free reusable, non-plastic sanitary products. Periods can cost a person up to £492 a year.

  • Sanitary waste

This pilot project will focus on sanitary waste. Every year, the disposal of single use menstrual products such as tampons, pads and applicators generates 200,000 tonnes of waste in the UK.

    Plastic in landfill waste

Most single-use disposable menstrual pads are made from 90 per cent plastic. Each household in Belfast produces almost four kg of hygiene product waste on average every year. This waste goes straight to landfill.

  • How to order home packs of reusable sanitary products

The scheme is open to all residents living in the Belfast City Council area. For more information on ordering these products, go to Hey girls (link opens in new window).
