Culture funding

We administer three culture, sport, arts and heritage grants:

Cultural Multi-Annual Grants

Our Cultural Multi-Annual Grants scheme includes two funding strands:

  • festivals and events organisations with an audience of more than 10,000
  • arts and heritage organisations with a year-round programme of activity

There are two tiers of funding available under each of these two strands – a two-year grant and a four-year grant.

Cultural activity is defined widely in keeping with our Cultural Strategy for Belfast 2020 – 2030, A City Imagining. It can include arts, heritage, architecture, sport, food, language, customs, traditions and ideas. The new investment model is one of the key outputs of this strategy. It has replaced our previous core multi-annual funding for arts and heritage.

The opportunity to apply for this funding launched on 7 October 2019 and closed on 22 November 2019. Recipients were notified in March 2020.

Applications for funding are currently closed. The two-year funding tiers are due to be open again in autumn 2021.

Arts and Heritage Project Grant

The Arts and Heritage Project Grant supports one-off arts and heritage organisational development initiatives or projects that are innovative (new or unique to Belfast).

These projects must contribute to two of the A City Imagining themes:

  • A City Belonging
  • A City Challenging
  • A City Creating
  • A City Exploring

The maximum annual award is £10,000. Tranche 2 of this fund will open on 27 April 2020 with a return deadline of 3 July 2020 for projects taking place between 1 October 2020 and 31 March 2021.

The Arts and Heritage Project grant is very competitive so we’d encourage you to meet with a member of the Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage team before you make your application.

The Community Festivals Fund

The Community Festivals Fund is jointly funded by Belfast City Council and the Department for Communities to recognise the role that festivals can play in increasing social cohesion, celebrating cultural identity and strengthening community relations.

Funding is available for community festivals taking place within the Belfast local government district, that focus on:
  • arts and heritage activities
  • other cultural events that contribute to the cultural identity of an area or group and celebrate the uniqueness of that area or group.

The fund is open for applications twice a year and Tranche 2 will be open on 27 April 2020 with a return deadline of 3 July 2020 for festivals taking place between 1 October 2020 and 31 March 2021.

The Community Festivals Fund is very competitive so we’d encourage you to meet with a member of the Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage team before you make your application.
