Marking the first new addition to the zoo of 2021, the iguana’s arrival is particularly special as it is the first of its kind to be born at the zoo.
A breeding pair of Fijian banded iguana arrived from Vienna Zoo and Augsburg Zoo back in 2018.
The Fijian banded iguana is an endangered lizard found on several of the Fiji Islands. This stunning species is bright blue and green in colour which helps to keep it camouflaged in the treetops, where it spends most of its life.
Zoo Manager, Alyn Cairns said:
This is the first time we have bred this species at Belfast Zoo and so the team are really excited to have welcomed the female youngster. These beautiful reptiles are truly striking and are emerald green in colour with the males being particularly colourful with vertical blue and light green stripes covering their body and tail. The reptile keeping team have reported that she is doing well and has been exploring her new home.
