Draft Disability Action Plan 2026-2029

Foreword

As the elected council that represents the people of Belfast, we need to consider the Disability Discrimination Act 1998 in everything we do.

Our Disability Action Plan is an important document, which shows our commitment to following Section 49A of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (as amended by the Disability Discrimination (NI) Order 2006).

The law asks all public authorities like us to:

  • promote positive attitudes towards disabled people
  • encourage disabled people to take part in public life.

This plan explains exactly how we will do this.

We exist to serve the people of Belfast and to lead on issues that matter to the people who live and work here.

We will make sure that:

  • all councillors and our staff know about our duties under the Disability Discrimination Act, and
  • we find the resources needed to train councillors and staff so they can carry out the actions in this plan.

We are committed to putting this plan into action, in line with our Disability Discrimination Order (DDO) duties.
