The Belfast Agenda Statement of Progress 2023-2025

Our ambitions

There are many things that we need to do to make our vision a reality. We’ve set ourselves five very bold ambitions to be achieved by 2035 - our progress against these longer-term targets is detailed in the following bullet points and has been benchmarked against agreed baselines. You can find further information on the data behind the ambitions in the supplementary Data Insight Report (link opens in new window).

  • Ambition: Our city is home to an additional 66,000 people.
Current status: The city’s population has increased by 3 per cent, equalling around 10,339 people. The increase accounts for 16 per cent of the 2035 target of 66,000 additional people.
  • Ambition: Our economy supports 46,000 additional jobs.
Current status: Number of jobs in the city has grown by 7 per cent, creating an additional 16,286 jobs. This equals a third of 2035 target of 46,000 additional jobs.
  • Ambition: There will be a 33 per cent reduction in the life expectancy gap between the most and least deprived neighbourhoods.
Current status: The life expectancy gap between the most and least deprived neighbourhood has widened for both men (10.8 years) and females (7.7 years) from the baseline year.
  • Ambition: Every young person leaving school has a destination that fulfils their potential.
Current status: 94.6 per cent of school levers entered further or higher education, employment, or training, which is marginally higher than the 94.5 value of the baseline year.
  • Ambition: Our carbon emissions will be reduced by 80 per cent.
Current status: Carbon emissions have fallen by 46 per cent since baseline year (2005), which equates to 1,347 ktCO2e.
