To ensure that the council, working with communities and stakeholders, takes a lead role in improving quality of life, now and for future generations of disabled people in Belfast by making the city and its neighbourhoods better places to live in, work in, invest in, study in and visit.

The purpose of the Disability Action Plan is to give coherence and guidance to the council’s activities across specific areas of policy that impact on disabled people.

The development of the plan enables us to further promote our work regarding accessible services, activities, facilities and buildings for disabled people.

Public authorities, when carrying out their functions must have due regard to the need to:

  • promote positive attitudes towards disabled people; and
  • encourage participation by disabled people in public life.

The council is required to prepare a Disability Action Plan, drawn up to consult with the public.
