International Certification of Digital Literacy (ICDL)

  • How does ICDL work?

    International Certification of Digital Literacy (ICDL) is a world-wide qualification, offered in over 100 countries, designed for those who want to gain a recognised qualification in the basic use of IT software applications.

    There are seven ICDL modules which must be passed before the ICDL certificate is awarded. ​Syllabi for the ICDL modules can be found within the BCS Level 2 Certificate in IT User Skills (ICDL Core) on the BCS website.

    1 Security for IT users For this module, the candidate must know about the basic components of a personal computer and understand some of the basic concepts of Information Technology (IT) such as data storage and memory. View Security for IT users syllabus
    2 IT users fundamentals For this module, the candidate must demonstrate knowledge and competence in using the basic functions of a computer and its operating system. View IT users fundamentals syllabus 
    3 Word processing For this module, the candidate must demonstrate the ability to use a word processing application on a computer. View Word processing syllabus
    4 Spreadsheet For this module, the candidate must understand and be able to accomplish basic operations associated with developing, formatting and using a spreadsheet. View Spreadsheet syllabus
    5 Database For this module, the candidate must understand the basic concepts of databases.  View Database syllabus
    6 Presentations For this module, the candidate must demonstrate competence in using the presentations application on a computer. The candidate will be able to accomplish basic tasks such as creating, formatting and preparing presentations for distribution and display. View Presentations syllabus
    7 Using email and the internet This module is divided in two sections. For the first section, information, the candidate must accomplish basic Web search tasks using a Web browser application and available search engine tools, to bookmark search results.  View Using email and the internet syllabus
