Lagan Gateway

  • The Lagan Gateway

The first phase of the Lagan Gateway project is complete. It included structural improvements and development works at Stranmillis including:

    • development of a navigation lock
    • construction of an iconic foot and cycle bridge
    • refurbishment of the existing weir
    • high quality landscaping and new path connections

The total investment in phase one of the project was approximately £5 million, with almost 50 percent of this coming from our Belfast Investment Fund

Other partners are Ulster Garden Villages, Department for Communities, Department for Infrastructure Rivers, the Department for Infrastructure and the Lagan Navigation Trust.

  • Phase two – connecting the greenway to Belvoir Forest Park

We’re currently finalising proposals for phase two of the project which will involve a greenway connection from Lagan Lands East to Belvoir Forest Park. This will be part of the Department for Infrastructure’s Belfast Cycling Network.

A consultation to give the community an opportunity to express their views and opinions on the proposed route took place between 5 June and 4 July 2022. You can find out more about the results of the consultation at Your Say: Lagan Gateway - Phase 2 (link opens in new window).

Feedback from the consultation has helped inform the detailed designs for this phase of the project. We shared these designs at a drop-in information sessions in summer 2023.

  • Timescales

The first phase of the project was completed in autumn 2021. Following public engagement - and subject to planning permission being granted - it is anticipated that work will get underway on phase two of the project in 2024.

This video (1 minute 25 seconds) captures a 39-metre-long section of the new foot and cycle bridge being installed as part of the first phase of the project. The bridge connects Lagan Towpath at Stranmillis to Annadale Embankment.
