Older residents of Belfast are in for a treat throughout October as Positive Ageing Month kicks off today, the International Day of Older Persons, with a month-long series of events and activities aimed at older people in the city.

Now in its 11th year, Positive Ageing Month brings a focus to the many different activities and events provided for older people in Belfast throughout the year by Age Friendly partners.

Speaking at an event to launch Positive Ageing Month, the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Roís-Máire Donnelly said “Tá áthas orm go mbeidh Mí an Aosaithe Dhearfaigh ag tarlú sa chathair arís den 10ú huair. Tá meas againn i mBéal Feirste ar ár gcónaitheoirí atá ag dul anonn in aois – is tuismitheoirí, seantuismitheoirí, cúramóirí, oibrithe deonacha, ceannairí agus oibrithe pobail iad, tá ról lárnach acu inár bpobal agus tá an iliomad táithí agus críonnacht le roinnt acu.

“I’m so pleased to see Positive Ageing Month return to the city.  Belfast recognises the huge value of our older residents – as parents, grandparents, carers, volunteers, leaders, and community workers, they are central to our society and have so much experience and wisdom to share. “

“Positive Ageing Month helps bring opportunities for connection, friendship, activity, knowledge, skills development and fun to our older residents through a series of events which are largely free and bring people together in every part of the city.

“We are very proud of our designation as an Age Friendly City.  This was awarded to Belfast in 2012 by the World Health Organisation, and helps us create a city that is safe, welcoming and sensitive to the needs of our older residents.

I hope everyone explores our programme this year, tries out some new things, meets some new people and above all, enjoy Positive Ageing Month.”

Positive Ageing Month provides an array of ways for older residents to stay connected, active and involved - whether that’s exercise classes, coffee mornings, tech workshops or history tours. It shines a light on the opportunities that are available to older people across our city throughout the year - not only those delivered by council, but also by the Age Friendly partners.

These include regular library events, workshops with a focus on health and wellness as you age, talks and walking tours, information sessions and arts and crafts.  There’s even the opportunity to try out circus skills!
