Zookeeper goes the distance for gorillas

One of our dedicated zookeepers, Dan, has gone the extra mile to support gorilla conservation.

Earlier in November, Dan took on the Tollymore Half Marathon, raising over £250 for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, an organisation that works to protect endangered gorillas and their habitats in Africa.

Western lowland gorillas are critically endangered, facing threats such as habitat loss, poaching and disease. The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund helps protect these great apes while supporting local communities and vital conservation research.

Dan helps care for our family of Western lowland gorillas, Gugas, Kofi, Namoki, Kwanza and Kamili, at Belfast Zoo. He was inspired to take on the challenge through his passion for these incredible animals and their wild cousins.

Zoo curator, Lara Clarke said:

We’re incredibly proud of Dan for his passion and dedication, both to the animals in his care and to conservation beyond the zoo gates. His enthusiasm for protecting wildlife truly embodies what Belfast Zoo stands for.
