Belfast to ring in New Year
3 December 2007
Belfast will `Rock Around The Clock` as it rings in the new year with a massive free concert.
Top local acts David Holmes, Foy Vance, Bap Kennedy and Tin Pot Operation will join headliners Ocean Colour Scene for the December 31 shindig at the city`s Custom House Square.
The gates will open at 7pm and the concert will finish at 12.30am.
Ocean Colour Scene have been one of Britain`s top folk-rock acts for the last 15 years, with 12 albums, 11 Top 20 singles and countless tours under their belts. They released their latest single, `Go To Sea`, last month and their latest tour starts in Cambridge tomorrow (Tuesday 4 December).
David Holmes is in many ways synonymous with Belfast`s clubbing scene, having been the driving force behind the now legendary Sugar Suite. He has gained international prominence as a DJ and composer, most notably through his contributions to the `Ocean`s 11` series of soundtracks. He recently launched a new band project, The Free Association.
Foy Vance can only be described as unique. From playing pubs in Bangor, he is now firmly established on the international stage, and has been by no less than Bonnie Raitt as `One of the most soulful and powerful singers and writers I`ve heard in a long while`. Foy has just completed his first album, `Hope`, and currently is working with David Holmes.
Bap Kennedy is another highly talented singer-songwriter, with his roots very firmly in his native west Belfast. Formerly lead singer with The Energy Orchard, he has forged a highly successful solo career, ranking the likes of The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Mark Knopfler among his fans. His latest album, `The Big Picture` features contributions from Van Morrison and Shane Magowan.
West Belfast indie-punk quartet Tin Pot Operation formed in 2003 and released their debut album, `Manufacturing Dissent`, shortly afterwards. Currently working on their new album, they have established a reputation as one of the few non-traditional bands to perform in the Irish language. They will be supporting punk legends The Damned at their forthcoming Belfast show later this month.
Tickets to `Rock Around The Clock` will be available – maximum four per person – from the Belfast Welcome Centre in Donegall Place from Tuesday 4 December. Terms and conditions apply. Visit www.belfastcity.gov.uk/events for more information.
A special Metro service will operate on the evening, with outward journeys from the city centre costing £1 per person. Information on routes and times are available from www.translink.co.uk
