Communities urged to brush off competition and clean up on great prizes
10 May 2012
Does your community have what it takes to brush away the competition and clean up on some prizes for your area?
Belfast City Council has launched Brush Factor 2012 – a cleanup challenge for groups and communities across the city – and is inviting people to register their community cleanup to be in with a chance of winning prizes sponsored by Ikea, Homebase, Tesco, Holiday Inn and Translink.
The competition follows the success of last year`s Brush Factor challenge which saw around 630 volunteers participate in cleanups across Belfast.
Councillor Pat McCarthy, chairman of the council`s Health and Environmental Services Committee, said:
“This is a big year for Belfast – between the Titanic commemorations, the Olympics, Queen`s Jubilee, Land of the Giants and the usual festivals, the city will be in the spotlight again - and one of the things we all want is for Belfast to be shown in its best light, and that means a clean, litter-free city.
“There’s already a lot of good work going on in communities across Belfast as residents work hard to create that sense of community spirit and take a pride in keeping their streets and communities tidy.
“The Brush Factor is one way of getting more people involved while recognising the efforts of community groups in Belfast. It`s about instilling a sense of collective responsibility for helping to maintain a cleaner, greener environment for everyone to enjoy.”
Any community or voluntary group, church or individual that organises and registers a cleanup between Monday 14 May and 31 August will automatically be entered into the competition with `before` and `after` pictures being part of the judging criteria.
There is a £150 Ikea voucher for the best cleanup and runner-up prizes of £50 vouchers for Tesco and Homebase. Holiday Inn is also offering a three course meal for two while Translink are providing six travel vouchers.
Every entrant will receive a cleanup kit to encourage regular and continued cleanups in the area.
