Belfast`s Gaeltacht quarter is officially on the map!
Thanks to a new Guide, the dynamic precincts of Belfast`s Gaeltacht Quarter can be better explored than ever before.
Stretching from the city centre through to the area around Milltown Cemetery, the historical legacy of this district makes it a vibrant component of city life.
As part of its Celebrate Belfast programme, Belfast Council is aiming to raise awareness of the city`s cultural quarters – Queen`s, Titanic, Cathedral and now the Gaeltacht.
Visitors and locals alike are being invited to pick up each of the four trails and venture outwards from the city centre, discovering the wonders of other parts of Belfast.
The guides, which are available from the Belfast Welcome Centre and tourist information centres across the city, are packed with maps and information highlighting special areas of interest.
Councillor Paul Maskey, Deputy Chairman of Belfast City Council`s Development Committee, said the Gaeltacht Quarter is evidence of the fusion of traditional with contemporary.
“Here the ancient language of Gaelic thrives in modern times in an area renowned for its community festivals and hospitality,” he added.
“As a Council we are committed to developing the cultural quarters in our city and enhancing their availability to everyone. Our aim is to raise awareness of the diversity and all that is on offer in Belfast.”
Jake MacSiacais, Director of Forbairt Feirste, commented: "The development of the Gaeltacht Quarter is one of the great challenges and opportunities for Belfast, offering us the chance to capitalize on the riches of the Irish Language and culture for all the citizens of this great city of ours.
"We are delighted to have been associated with this timely publication from Celebrate Belfast, which highlights some of the unique attractions of this quarter of the city and presents it in user-friendly fashion for tourists and locals alike."
