Looking for a gentle way to stay active and connect with others in the community? Walking is an ideal way to get active, and living in a city means there’s no reason to step it out alone.

Wander into wellness with these age friendly walking groups across Belfast.

You should wear suitable footwear and clothing for all-weather walking.

The H.E.A.R.T Project Walkabout Club

This walk takes place every Thursday at 2pm (this may vary during holiday periods). Meet at the Falls Road entrance of Falls Park.

With a front walker who walks at the fastest person’s pace and back walker who walks at the slowest person’s pace, this walk is suitable for all as it can be taken at your own pace.

You don't need to book in advance, just turn up.

The group also enjoy an away day once a month, for those who walk weekly.

Engage with Age Monday and Wednesday Walks

There are two walks:

Walk East

Meet at the Walkway East Belfast Community Centre, every Wednesday at 2pm.

Walk South

Meet at Botanic Gardens every Monday at 11am.

If you’re seeking variety, this group explores walks of various lengths. They finish their strolls with a chat over tea or coffee. These walks take place throughout the year but not on public holidays or during very bad weather. For walk information and to book, email [email protected]. To join these walks, you must book.

The Carer Support Service Walking Group with the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust

If you’re seeking variety, this group walk in different locations across the city. These one-hour walks alternate between a range of venues including Ormeau Park in South Belfast and Waterworks in North Belfast. The group walks at a steady pace and to suit the needs of the group.

The walks take place on various days, starting at 10.30am. If you are an unpaid carer and interested in taking part, you can email [email protected] or call 028 9504 2126 to register.

EastSide Greenways Gentle Walk Group

There are two walks:

Gentle Walk

This walk takes place on the first three Mondays of every month at 11am. Meet at the EastSide Visitor Centre.

If you are new to walking groups or would prefer a gentler option, this group heads out for a short, slow-paced walk that can last between 45 and 60 minutes depending on the participants in the group. People in the walking group have varying abilities, some with visual impairments. Dotted along the flat route are plenty of places to sit. Rest moments are taken whenever needed. Best of all, everyone can enjoy a well-earned cup of tea at the end.

Participants can drop in and out of the walks as they please without having to register each week. The group ask new attendees to complete a registration form. You can do this on the day or advance. When done in advance, it can help walk leaders look out for new faces.

Walk Wednesday Group

This walk starts every Wednesday at 11am. Meet at the EastSide Visitor Centre.

This walk takes approximately 90 minutes and is suitable for a variety of ability levels with the route being mostly flat and even surfaced. You can join this social stroll along the Greenway and the group’s friendly faces are always keen to welcome newcomers.
