Belfast City Council's Age-friendly team is celebrating the success of their Summer Programme of events for older people.

Throughout July and August, organised walks have been held in parks across the city encouraging seniors in Belfast to enjoy time together and participate in exercise in a safe and socially distanced way.

Lord Mayor of Belfast City Council Councillor Kate Nicholl joined the group at Sir Thomas & Lady Dixon Park last week and said:

“After so much uncertainty over the past 18 months, it was heart warming to see these groups of people back out together, enjoying the summer weather and the beautiful parks that we have on our doorstep."

"The Age-friendly team have provided a much needed opportunity for older people to reconnect, have a chat and socialise again and although the summer may be coming to an end, there is much to look forward to ahead of Positive Ageing Month in October with a host of activities planned and I am very much looking forward to getting involved.”

Throughout October, Positive Ageing Month will celebrate the contribution Belfast’s older citizens make to the city and their local communities.

Some Positive Ageing Month favourites like Chocolate Bingo, the Big Quiz and a Tea Dance will all be done virtually for older people to enjoy from the comfort of their own homes.

There will also be cookery demonstrations, shared reading, history talks, info sessions, and even sing along sessions . Some events will still take place at live venues such as the Silver Sunday at the Ulster Museum, movies at the Strand Cinema and guided walks. These events will follow strict social distancing guidelines.

The month of activities will kick off on Friday 1 October with the Virtual Age-friendly Belfast Convention which will be streamed live from City Hall.

Programmes will be available from mid September and for more details email positiveageingmonth@belfastcity.gov.uk
