Date: 3 February 2026
The continued expansion of the kerbside glass recycling service in Belfast will see over 23,000 more households receive collections as part of Phase 2 of the city-wide rollout.
Phase 2 will be delivered between February and March 2026 and forms part of the council’s three-year programme to extend kerbside glass recycling to around 70,000 households which do not have this service.
Households included in this phase will receive a 44-litre purple glass recycling box with fortnightly collections. Residents will be contacted directly in advance with information on how the service works, including collection days, accepted materials and start dates. Box deliveries will be followed shortly by the first collections.
Councillor Fred Cobain, Chair of the People and Communities Committee, said:
“This next phase of the kerbside glass recycling rollout is another important step in making recycling easier and more accessible for households across Belfast. By expanding the service to more areas of the city, we are helping residents to recycle more and reduce waste going to landfill.”
The expansion is funded through a combination of Belfast City Council capital investment and support from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA).
Minister Andrew Muir said: “By expanding kerbside glass recycling, the council aims to increase the quality and quantity of materials recycled, while reducing landfill and supporting the local circular economy. These principles are in line with my draft waste management strategy which was recently issued for consultation.”
Residents who are not included in Phase 2 can continue to recycle glass bottles and jars at household recycling centres and bottle banks across the city. A further phase of the project is planned, with the final rollout expected in 2026/27, subject to funding approval.
More information on how to recycle glass at home is available on the council’s recycling pages.
