Lord Mayor, Councillor Kate Nicholl, was recently presented with a framed copy of the Belfast Statement on Mental Health and Deafness by Brian Symington, President and Chair of the Organisation Committee for the 6th World Congress on Mental Health and Deafness.
The Belfast Statement is an outcome of the 6th World Congress which was hosted in Belfast in 2014. The theme of the Congress was ‘Pathways to Rights’ with Council supporting the Congress in its opening ceremony at City Hall.
The Congress was organised by the European Society on Mental Health and Deafness, in collaboration with the Royal College of Psychiatrists (NI) and Queen’s University.
The Statement sets out the right to effective communication access in mental health settings for Deaf, late-deafened, hard of hearing and Deafblind people of all ages. It is endorsed by the World Federation of the Deaf, the European Society on Mental Health and Deafness, the British Deaf Association, Sense/Sense International and the NI Human Rights Commission.
