Landlord and housing association fined for illegal eviction

A landlord and a Housing Association have both been fined £750 for illegally evicting a tenant from her rented accommodation.

Asherwoods Housing Association Ltd, University Street, Belfast, and Maurice Dawson, a director within the company, were also ordered to pay £198 in costs at Belfast Magistrates Court.

The prosecution was brought by Belfast City Council after the tenant was locked out of her accommodation at Kirkliston Drive, Belfast, between 26 June 2023 and 3 July 2023.

This ruling highlights that legal protections are in place for tenants. Landlords must be aware of tenants’ rights.
