City Hall lighting up for International Nurses’ Day

4 May 2020

Belfast Lord Mayor Councillor Daniel Baker has paid a special tribute to nurses ahead of International Nurses’ Day.

City Hall will light up in NHS blue to mark the day on Tuesday 12 May.

It comes only a few days after Belfast’s most iconic building was illuminated in red to mark International Workers’ Day on May 1 as a tribute to all frontline workers.

Councillor Baker said: “It has never been more important to show our appreciation for our nurses, and indeed all our healthcare workers, who are providing the highest standards of care for the people who need it most during these extremely challenging times.

“I’m delighted that we will be lighting up City Hall to mark International Nurses’ Day as a tribute to all those men and women, and thank them for their commitment and dedication as they help in the battle against Covid19.&rdquo

He added: “Our nurses are doing an incredible job in the most difficult and challenging of circumstances. They too have families and loved ones, and every day they are putting their own health at risk to help others. Their contribution cannot be underestimated and I would like to say thank you on behalf of the city, and hope this small gesture to light up City Hall goes some way to letting nurses know how much they are appreciated.”

Belfast City Council is providing mutual aid for Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, offering health workers access to its leisure centres for showering and changing, to help reduce the risk of spreading Covid19 when workers return home.

Councillor Baker added: “At this time, we as a Council are doing everything we can to support the efforts of our health trusts, government agencies and city partners. We need to work together and support each other, and this is just another small way in which we can assist those who are working round the clock to keep us safe and providing care for the most vulnerable in our society.”
