Lord Mayor supports Small Business Saturday across city on 1 December
7 Nov 2018
The Lord Mayor welcomed the Small Business Saturday campaign bus to Belfast on Friday in the run up to ‘Small Business Saturday’ on 1 December.
Councillor Deirdre Hargey joined the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and others to support the grassroots campaign which encourages people to support small businesses and ‘shop local’.
“Belfast City Council are fully behind this campaign to support our small businesses right in the heart of Belfast and in the communities,” the Lord Mayor said.
“With the Bank Buildings fire, we have seen the devastation that has been caused to small business. So in the run up to Christmas, we need everyone to come out and support Small Business Saturday on 1 December and back our local independent retailers, traders and businesses by shopping local across the city. “
Small Business Saturday takes places on the first Saturday of December across the UK and aims to support and promote small business. The campaign encourages businesses to promote themselves and work with other small businesses and consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small, independent businesses in the communities.
Brendan Kearney, Regional Chair of FSB, said: “FSB is a strong supporter of the Small Business Saturday campaign. Small business is the backbone of the economy in Northern Ireland and a much needed provider of employment, investment and service within the local communities here. On the 1st of December and throughout the run up to Christmas, I would urge people to think local and think small business”
Michelle Ovens, MBE, Director of Small Business Saturday, said: “We were excited for the Small Business Saturday bus to be stopping by in Belfast and championing small businesses throughout the local area and providing a listening ear and a chance for mentoring.
“Small businesses employ more people than the public sector and larger businesses combined. The city is the perfect place to celebrate their success and continue this legacy. The tour was not just open to businesses, it was open to everyone – every individual who could take a moment to appreciate the far-reaching impact small businesses have on their community.”
