The High Sheriff of Belfast, Councillor Nicola Verner, joined a number of women involved in peacebuilding at a PEACE IV event at Belfast Castle today, in the run up to International Women’s Day.

The ‘Past, Present and Future Perspectives on Peacebuilding’ seminar included a panel of speakers among them Jane Morrice, former Deputy Speaker of the Assembly and the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition and Mary Montague, a founding member of Women Waging Peace global network and the Corrymeela Community.

The event explored perspectives of women involved in building peace from the past, present and future. Attendees also got a chance to ask questions of the panel based on their contributions as women to building peace through the darkest days of The Troubles to modern day issues and campaigning for change.

It was held as part of the council’s PEACE IV programme, which is funded through the European Union and managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) and aims to promote peace and reconciliation across the city. Tomorrow (Friday) also sees the official opening of a new €6.5 million purpose-built shared space for women and their families located at the interface area at Lanark Way in west Belfast, which is also supported through the PEACE IV programme.

Shankill Shared Women’s Centre is funded through the programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) with match-funding also provided by the Department for Communities in Northern Ireland and the Department of Rural and Community Development in Ireland.
