Suspended custodial sentence for assault on Council officer

A Belfast man has been sentenced following an incident involving a Council officer on 3 April 2025.

Mr Thomas Trevor Gordon of Ina Street, Belfast was sentenced today (Friday 29 August) and had previously pleaded guilty to common assault.  He was found guilty of possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence.

During the incident Mr Gordon was verbally aggressive and pushed the officer before attempting to use a hammer towards the officer’s head.

The officer was not physically injured and was able to call for police assistance.

Mr Gordon was today (Friday 29 August 2025) sentenced to 4 months in prison for the first offence and 6 months in prison for the second offence, both were suspended for 2 years.

Councillor Natasha Brennan, Chair of Strategic Policy and Resources Committee said:

“Belfast City Council is firmly committed to the safety, wellbeing, and respect of all our staff. We strongly condemn any form of violence or abuse towards our employees, who work every day to serve the community.

“This incident underlines the importance of our zero-tolerance approach to workplace violence.

“We will continue to work closely with the PSNI to protect staff, while providing full support to those affected and encouraging anyone with concerns to report them without hesitation.”
