XL Bully owner convicted for failing to obtain an exemption certificate for his dog

Date: 22 July 2025

A Belfast man has been sentenced at Belfast Magistrates’ Court today, Tuesday 22 July 2025, for keeping an XL Bully dog without an exemption certificate.

Belfast City Council took the prosecution against Ryan Tyrie of Willowfield Street, Belfast as he had failed to apply for and obtain an Exemption Certificate for his XL bully by the deadline of 31 December 2024.

Mr Tyrie admitted the offence and was convicted of breaching Article 25(A) of The Dogs (Northern Ireland) Order 1983. He was fined £150 and required to pay £800 kennelling costs in addition to £123 legal and court costs.

Mr Tyrie is now fully co-operating with Council and is going through the process to exempt his XL Bully.
