The park is home to Cave Hill Adventurous Playground, archaeological sites, visitor information area in Belfast Castle, ecotrails, walking and orienteering routes.
Getting to Belfast Castle Estate
You can enter the park through Cave Hill Adventurous Playground at Gray's Lane or Innisfayle Park. Take Metro no.1 A-H from Belfast city centre (Monday to Saturday) or no.1 C-E or H (Sundays).
The estate contains landscaped gardens and mature mixed woodland and offers superb views of the city from a variety of vantage points. It is home to many different species of wildlife, including long-eared owls, sparrowhawks and Belfast's rarest plant; the town hall clock.
Natural flood management scheme and outdoor educational area
In February 2022 a natural flood management pilot project was introduced in the grounds of the estate. This saw a number of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) installed to better manage wastewater and drainage within the site.
The project, funded by the Department for Infrastructure through their Living With Water in Belfast plan, also saw a new outdoor classroom and forest trail added to the grounds.
School art project
To help launch the flood management scheme, pupils from Cavehill Primary School and Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School were invited to attend the first session in the outdoor classroom.
The pupils were given a guided tour to see the new sustainable drainage systems and learn about the benefits of introducing natural flood management upstream. Attendees were then invited to take part in a competition focusing on what they learnt on their visit. Below you can see the top three entries from each school. The winners each received a family pass to Belfast Zoo and an Easter egg.
