Learn about the cemetery's history and significance on a free guided tour.

The tour is part of European Heritage Open Days (EHOD). 

Over 225,000 people were buried in the cemetery since it opened in the 1860s.

The cemetery has many examples of Victorian, Edwardian and Gothic Revival architecture, providing an insight into the history of Belfast.

Sections were used to bury the poor, with unmarked graves believed to house the remains of 80,000 people.

The cemetery's other important historical sites are:

• the plot of the Ulster Female Penitentiary
• the Jewish burial ground, and
• an underground wall to separate the graves of Catholics and Protestants.
